International relations and psychology student on exchange in Japan

Why did you choose your host country and host university, Kwansei Gakuin University?
I chose Japan because I wanted to improve my speaking abilities. I have a lot of Japanese friends and we are close, which means I will eventually meet their family. I also chose the university, because I was an RA for the MASSIE program for two years and wanted to see some of my friends from the program.

What was your favourite experience while on exchange?
Living with my host family and the train system in Japan. Of course, I have unforgettable moments with my friends, like going to USJ, but my host family made me feel right at home as soon as I landed. They were the main input I had for my language and thanks to them, now I know that if you work hard enough, you can achieve your dreams no matter how impossible they might seem. And the train system because it's always on time, is super clean and super convenient.

What was something surprising or different that you experienced while on exchange?
I think something surprising is seeing how kind and warm-hearted Japanese people are. They are always willing to help you, they are emphatic and also they like to learn about your culture. Being able to share some tacos with my host family was definitely one of the best memories I could have made.

Words of advice to a student consider an exchange.
I will tell you what my host mom told me "Remember to follow your dreams". There is a reason why you feel like that country is calling you, or why you feel you should go there. You should just follow your heart and experience new things, the memories will last forever! I鈥檓 so glad I was able to participate in the exchange program and I would encourage every MtA student to take part in it.
